Why is there a figure skating Champions Gala?

Figure skaters have to spend so much time to train for their competitions, I don`t really think it`s fair to ask them to spend more time to practice an exhibition routine that they may or may not perform. If it were me in that situation I`d tell the gala organizers to piss off. If there is to be a gala it should be at a different venue from the competition.
